What Areas do I work with?
KINGSTON-UPON-THAMES:
Individual Therapy Sessions
I offer individual therapy sessions for a range of psychological problems. Some of these include, addiction problems: alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex, eating problems; being a family member of an addict; anxiety disorders; bereavement and loss: depression; divorce; family problems; isolation and loneliness; living with chronic illness; low self-esteem; mental health issues; psycho-sexual problems; relationship problems; sadness; stress; social anxiety, trauma and work related issues.
Many of the problems listed above can be the result of our individual backgrounds and how we have been brought-up. We might live with issues throughout our lives that actually originated in our early years, but we do not understand that how we relate in the world has been impacted by this. I have a Post-Graduate Certificate in Attachment-based therapy, so will work with clients, if it is something they would like to do, to explore and understand how their individual backgrounds have affected them and how to live in a different way in the future.
Individual Addiction Treatment
I offer an individual addiction treatment programme in Kingston, helping clients to move towards abstinence from substances, or particular behaviours, such as gambling. I will also work with clients wishing to reduce their substance intake or behaviours, and to help them make their lives more manageable. We can explore individual requirements at the beginning of the programme and set an objective accordingly.
I believe that people struggling with addiction problems use chemicals or behaviours to 'self-medicate' emotional pain. This could come from early life experiences, or as a result of the difficulties and stress inherent in everyday life. My approach is to work with clients in the 'here and now' to understand behaviours, to help maintain abstinence and to prevent relapse. In the early stages I use a Cognitive Behavioural Approach to recovery, but will move onto more attachment-based work once abstinence has been achieved.
Clients can attend either once or twice per weeks, according to individual circumstances. However, there will be homework assignments to do outside of the sessions to gain the maximum benefit from the programme.
Family Therapy for Addiction
Working with the family members of someone suffering from addiction requires a sensitive understanding of the problems, and how it impacts on everybody involved. With this in mind, I offer support to both the partners and the family members of the person attending treatment. There has to be changes on all levels if an individual is going to be successful in addiction treatment. Therefore, every member of the family unit needs both understanding and support.
WIMPOLE STREET:
The individual addiction programme above is also available in Wimpole Street.
Psychotherapy and counselling is about building a trusting and open relationship between the client and the practitioner, so the client feels safe to explore their issues.
Whatever a psychotherapist's training background, this will always be central to helping a client to change. The result for the client entering into therapy, is a place and time in life like no other, which gives them the space to focus on themselves, on what they are struggling with and to find clarity and resolution to enable them to be able to live more fulfilled lives in the future.
